A few weeks ago I got a phone call from Bob, a longstanding MyChipCarving member and acquaintance, who told me he was going into hospice and wouldn't be doing any more chip carving.
With this sad news he was wondering what he could do with the chip carving supplies he'd gathered over the years. Off hand I didn't have an answer but told him he could send them to me and I'd figure something out.
This past week two boxes of his supplies arrived. I've looked through them and have an idea I want to run past you.
From Bob's supplies and a few items from my inventory, I can put together 3 Chip Carving Loaner Kits so anyone could open the box, follow the instructions I'll provide, and give chip carving a try. The Kit will include 2 MyChipCarving Knives, Pattern Transfer Tool, Strop, a copy of Chip Carving Essentials, laser printed pattern, basswood and access to online step-by-step instruction. Similar to the Quick Start Kit.
Anyone could use one of these Loaner Kits to "Introduce a kid to chip carving" whether it be a neighbor, your own child, grandchild, or someone in your carving club who wants to try chip carving.
Whoever wants to learn or introduce someone to chip carving could get one of these Loaner Kits with the only cost being the price of shipping and return shipping, about $25. All price barriers are removed so anyone can give chip carving a try!
The Loaner Kit would arrive in the mail along with a prepaid return mailing label. I'm thinking 2-weeks would be enough time and then they put all the materials back in the box, apply the mailing label and send it back so someone else can have a go at it.
I think this would be very honoring to Bob and be a good way to pass on his joy with chip carving to others.
