Since last week's letter, I received several emails with feedback on the Chip Carving Loaner Kits.
All replies were positive about this idea which is encouraging. Here's a summary of some of the feedback that I'll definitely take into consideration:
make the loaner time longer, 3-4 weeks
have them available in other countries, disadvantaged areas
include a project in the Kit
consider overdue fines, replacement costs for items not returned
include Bob's story and some pictures
I'll let you know when I have these Loaner Kits ready. I'll be adding them to the Store for easy loan and return.
Also, I got three more boxes from Bob this past week. The items inside were mostly projects in various states of completion. I think I'll assemble the items into Bob's Chip Carving Packages and put them up for auction. All of the proceeds would go towards restocking the Loaner Kits.
Stay tuned!

Dorothy wanted to chip carve a special gift for her dad's 99th birthday! She is also a woodturner so combining both skills led to this "Woodpecker chip carving a platter" idea!
Very creative.
Here's how she applied a finish and pattern on top of the dark color.
"Not everyone can train a woodpecker to chip carve. So I printed off the pattern. Then put the tape , erasable kind, over the printed section and printed it again. Then the tape came off quite easily so I could put it on the board. The hard part was removing the tape from the tiny squares and the narrow bits between chips after carving Finger nails worked best to get it started then very carefully pull it off with needle nosed tweezers. I didn’t
want to damage the finish. About 4 coats of thinner than directed aniline dye. Mahogany. And 2 or 3 coats of Varathane.
I’m quite pleased with the result and really like the contrast between carved white and the mahogany surface.
