When I say "I HAD a dream", it was nothing like the "I HAVE a Dream" MLK Jr. spoke so eloquently about.
Maybe I should have said, "I had a STRANGE dream" 🤪
It was strange, and this may give both of us a glimpse into my mixed up head, because I woke up having dreamt that all of my chip carvings were the same! Strange! 🤪
I was talking to someone and trying to explain why they were all identical and didn't have a hint of originality in any of them. Strange! 🤪
Who knows where this came from, but where it went to is the topic of next week's Live Platinum Member Webinar.

The FOCUS of this NEW
Project for June: Small Desktop Clock
When carving and recording the steps to make this Small Desktop Clock, I decided to focus primarily on this method of Finishing.
There are several Videos and Course lessons on how to carve Gothic leaf shapes, Gothic rosettes and borders. No need to spend much time on that technique so I hit the highspeed button!
The parts that needed explanation and attention had to do with using a gel stain, vinyl masking with pattern applied, carving techniques unique to carving through vinyl mask, mask removal and the final finishing steps.
This Clock includes 2 pieces of clear basswood, quartz clock insert with battery and the pattern applied to vinyl masking (optional).
NOTE: We're all getting sticker shock on goods these days. It's really depressing. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to escape it on my end when it comes to buying parts for projects like the small quartz clock inserts on this June project. Quartz clock inserts have skyrocketed in price during the past year. Thanks for understanding and thanks for your support during this challenging time.
This is my first time using a black gel stain. You can stain yours any color you like or you can carve and finish it another way. The choice is yours!
I firstly wanted to say a big thank you for all this content you have created. I can’t make clear just how helpful all these lessons have been to me as someone who had never chip carved before a few months ago!
My question is a about the letters carving course. I am about half way through and I am noticing that all the lessons have the letters set out along the grain. I need to do some carving with the letters set out across the grain. Is the order of cuts the same? It seems like there would be less areas of weak short grain when the letters are set across the grain – if that makes any sense?
Thanks again and God bless! Tim
Hi Tim,
Wonderful to know that the lessons and Courses are so helpful to you. Perfect! This helps me keep producing great content!
Good observation about grain direction when carving letters and numbers.
The order of cuts “may” change. You’re right that short grain areas will be less especially on letters like W, M, N etc.
As you recognized this, you’ve already conquered a major part of the struggle!
I’d suggest you apply some of the letters in the opposite orientation with the grain and carve away!
If you have any other thoughts, observations and questions, please reach out!!
Marty
