Last week I told you how I came up with the basic pattern idea for this year's Christmas ornament. Shahab made this post on Instagram and I ran with it.
With some alterations and adjustments this is the design I settled on for the 2022 Ornament.
This past Tuesday I showed everyone at the Platinum Member Webinar a different way to carve this ornament!
The pattern is pretty much the same but the technique used to remove the chips is entirely different. I mentioned that this method is harder than making
every cut at a consistent 55-65 degree angle, so it would be best for new chip carvers to pass on trying this technique until they are successful carving the original pattern.
The technique I demonstrated is called geometric carving and is very popular in Ukraine, Russia and other nearby regions.
If you're interested in learning how to do geometric carving, you can watch the replay of this week's webinar in the Platinum Member Video Archive.
Fox Chapel Publishing, Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine, asked if they could include information about what MyChipCarving has to offer in their Holiday issue for those wanting to learn more about this craft.
Well of course!! I opened up the Members site to Kaylee, the editor, so they could
browse around and write an accurate and informative spot. Here's what she wrote.
I was humbled by this and more so when she replied to my thank you by saying,
"We've enjoyed exploring all the resources on the site. You really have a great system set up."
Telling you about this interaction is in no way patting myself on the back. But rather, it encourages me to know that the materials available to
you are seen by others, like Kaylee, as "...accessible and fun."
Words like this keeps me going!
NEW Ideas!
Dave Howard and his wife, Pat, stopped by for an enjoyable visit last Thursday!
They were on their way home to Montana and we were a close stop on their route.
Dave shared a Star of David shape with me and it had a pattern on it for me to carve. Great! I'm always interested in what you are carving and ideas you come up with.
If you are ever anywhere close to southern Minnesota, please stop by to say hello. Bring your knives too and I'll be glad
to put a Scary Sharp edge on them.
ANOTHER New Idea!
Cliff called this past week and told me about something he picked up at a store and was chip carving it.
And it wasn't made from wood!
What he was doing with this item was creative and unique. So much so that I purchased several of these for the Store.
I'll let you know more about it sometime soon. I bet you're going to like it!
