Reason #4: Chip Carving isn't an expensive hobby!

We're not in good financial times right now, but I'm still going to talk about money and why chip carving is affordable.

To start with, here's what you DON'T need to chip carve.

Chisels and Gouge$$$

Several Knive$$

Vices and Clamp$$

Power Carving Tool$$$

Carving Bench $$

Workshop Studio $$$$

etc.

ALL you really need to chip carve is ONE Scary Sharp Knife a piece of basswood and some good instruction.

This is why I created the Quick Start Chip Carving Kit.

Anyone can get these items and video instruction to go along with my book for only $79.90.

Compare that to learning relief carving. Introductory sets of good mallet chisels, sharpening equipment, mallet, and more is at least $200 to $300 without any instruction.

At the start of MyChipCarving in 2007-2009, I really wanted to help those with financial needs to be able to learn how to chip carve, so I set up, what I called the MyChipCarving Foundation. I shared this vision with my followers, several contributed and after screening some applicants I sent out some basic kits. This plan worked okay, but very few of the recipients followed through with their commitment, which was unfortunate, so it wound down after a couple of years.

This past year, Bob Schweikert who was an acquaintance and MCC member, passed away. But before he went into hospice he donated his chip carving materials so they could be put to good use. With your support and some of Bob's supplies, we started the Chip Carving Loaner Kit Program.

In the past several months we've loaned out Kits to at least seven individuals. And the feedback has been positive.

It's not 100% free which I think is a good thing. Having some skin in the game adds commitment and ownership to the process. Agreeing to pay two-way shipping is a small investment to make to use this Kit, work through some lessons, see what you think and return it in 4-weeks. Video instruction and patterns are included. So now we're really talking affordable to try chip carving and see if you like it.

And one final point on the affordability of chip carving is that a wide variety of projects are available to match any budget.

With a coping saw and a $3.10, 5" basswood practice board, you can carve 4 ornaments for less than $1.00/each! Even a cheap Dutchman like me knows that's a good deal.

A few weeks ago I shared with you how I helped Solomon (15-year old grandson) find and buy his first truck. Now, to earn money to pay for it I have a 3 acre plot that invasive trees have taken over that needs clearing. A perfect opportunity for him to learn about hard work and how to safely operate a chainsaw. Not my favorite time of year to cut trees, but anytime is perfect to teach him some useful skills.
