Troy is applying what he's learning
You just gotta read what Troy shared with me...
"Also just wanted to share that I have found the finishing techniques extremely helpful in enhancing my carvings, whether it's
adding color or applying gel stain.
I have always applied stain to achieve a uniform color and was happy with the results, so I was a little reluctant to try a new method. But
after comparing the traditional stain results in the first picture with your method in the second, I was sold! Your method really accentuates the carving and makes things pop."
"Before becoming a platinum memberI never would have thought to try plates, candle-holders, free-form carvings, and lettering. Thank you for helping to expand the possibilities and my
abilities of chip carving!
Finally, I wanted to share how your latest Christmas ornament design came to be the main decoration of a necktie.
My daughter is a HS
Senior and a member of her school's drill team. Each year they do a 'Bob & Susie' (Father-daughter) dance routine for one of the half-time performances. The senior dancers make custom ties for their dads to wear, and they are usually over-the-top! I had taken this year's ornament pattern and arranged it to optimize the size of the boards I was using. Somehow I screwed up the ornament size along the way, so they ended up being smaller than intended. I carved 9 of them before I realized
the error. As time was ticking down for the tie to be made, we decided to use the 'mini' ornaments to decorate the tie, and I think the result was great! Funny how God takes a mistake and finds a use for it."
"There wasn't a plumbing emergency - as a drill officer, she gets to carry a mace for the introductions, the Dads get a plunger. All
ornaments survived the performance and remained intact.
I've rambled long enough. Thanks for everything you do to help folks like me learn and grow in the art of chip carving.
All the
best,
Troy N."
A BIG thanks to you, Troy! All of us are enriched and
inspired
by what you shared in word and picture.
Werner is getting back into the chips!
"I grew up in Switzerland and are familiar with the art of chip carving. I have lived in Canada now for 50 years.
When I was 15 years old I took woodworking and metal work in school. It was a one year project to make a chest including the metal
parts. That was my intro to chip carving. I included a couple of pictures of the chest.
A few decades ago somebody gave me the chip carving book by Christian Rubi. It was a little
jewel at the time. How times have changed with the technique of chip carving. Transferring patterns, knifes etc. and the wonderful videos that are so helpful.
I have carved on and off over the years a little bit here and there but would like to get a bit
more into it now. Retirement frees up a lot of time and Winter is a good time for it."
