Take a look at this Candle Holder Plate that just came out of our Christmas box...
It was a project several months ago and it reminded me of a design principle that can be easily overlooked.
Vary the chip size
It's the combination of
large leaf chips (green) and small three-corner chips (red) that create interest and variety in the carving.
If the leaf and three-corner chips were the same size, nothing would create interest in the design and the viewer's eye wouldn't have anything to grab on to.
The
contrasting chip size makes this carving a winner. So next time you're creating your own design, remember to Vary the chip size!
David's chip carved Christmas Gifts!
These Hand
Mirrors and 9x14 Cross are carved in EZboard. David painted them first and carved through the paint to leave a contrasting color for the pattern.
Although these products are no longer available in EZboard, you can accomplish similar results in
basswood.
Carl's got the "I can't help its!"
Marty,
My mother used to say, "I've got the, 'I can't help its!'"
I couldn't help it, I had to share a progress pic on the border I'm putting on my Lions. I mean, I am proud and quite pleased with this border. I think it's regal
enough to complement those beautiful Leos!!
