During the October Platinum Member Webinar next Tuesday, Oct. 11th, I'll give a quick explanation on how I created this pattern from the photo as well as demonstrating how to add color to this Fall project.
"Working on my knife box. I've finished the lace border on the edges and working on the top, 3 rosette-like designs (first time for
each), plus a Chevron border. Lesson - no matter how many times I've carved successfully, every single cut requires a scary sharp knife, awareness of grain and cut sequence, focus, attention to detail (angle, grip, piece stability and orientation, lighting, etc), patience, commitment, and dedication to the craft. I've had several breakouts, realized my knife is only sharp, not scary sharp, wasn't planning my cut sequence, missed the angle a couple times.... Awe, man!
Hahahahahaha.
But, you know what? I not gonna throw it away and start over after all the beauty I've already created, so I decided I'll complete carving, stain and finish it
just as it is, flaws and all. That way I have a living lesson - every time I go to get my knives I'll remember what it takes to chip carve to satisfaction. And that, good buddy, is a life lesson for everything I do! Whoda thought ole Marty could teach a 72 yo old dog new tricks to live my life more productively, and with less self-criticism?!? LOL
"Firsts with the lace border on edges, and all three rosettes. Only thing I had carved before was the Chevron border on top. Lots of mistakes, even used some
plastic wood on 2 breakouts. Yet I am pleased overall and am proud of myself for seeing the beauty beyond the flaws! Part of my satisfaction is me developing the designs and laying them out instead of transferring.
Just sharing another project. Walnut stain, satin Minwax Polycrylic. "
Carl gets the bigger picture as expressed with his reply to me...
"Chip carving has literally been healing therapy for me, and your recognition has been part of the benefit.
Thanks for the affirmation of sharing my work with the community. "
"I am attaching another rosette (a new design) that I finished today. It is so interesting how the image changes if the rosette rotates (very dynamic in the
diamond, and more solid, peaceful in the square). I like both angles. Additionally, I am particularly happy that I had two chip outs but I managed to glue the chips back."
