Hello ,

I think you'll enjoy this project to start off your chip carving for 2023. It's been a popular item in the Store for a long time.

Here's how I came up with this pattern.

While browsing through some of my chip carving books, I came across something in this book from Fox Chapel, Everyday Chip Carving Designs, p.61.

The comb design gave me the idea for this month's pattern.

Overcoming an Obstacle!

The 2022 ornament was difficult to hold and make the cuts along the edges. Ted solved this problem by creating this unique template. Thanks for sharing this with all of us, Ted!

"Hi Marty and Bethany,

I’ve started practicing next year’s ornament (actually the one for 2022 but with the date changed to 2023- thanks again Bethany!) and realized I can maintain much better chip carving form if I can keep thumb, knife and first couple of fingers in the correct placement. Moving pieces of wood around on the turntable got a bit annoying so I got a piece of masonite, rounded it to fit the turntable and cut a hole to match the ornament shape. Did have to put in a thin cardboard spacer to bring the ornament up to same level as the masonite. The smooth finish on the masonite is nice and smooth making it easy to move knife and hand around when carving. Ornament fits snugly so it doesn’t move around when carving.

This is a very random Leenhouts family photo taken

in the mid 1960's.

My dad would have been about 35 at the time and now he's 93. He still lives alone in the house we moved to when I was in the 5th grade. I sorta like how we were dressed up. Sure doesn't happen much today, myself included.

Don't worry, I won't show you any slides!
