During Tuesday's Platinum Member Webinar, I demonstrated how to chip carve this month's Project using Old World Style.
So what is Old World Style chip carving and how is it different from the Swiss Style of chip carving
❓
Shown below are the ends of the Salt & Pepper Box. Look back and forth from left to right, left to right, left to right. What do you notice?
Do you see how the shadows are different?
Swiss style chips are removed with all cuts made at the same angle, about 55-65 degrees. Consistent cuts made at the same angle with all cuts meeting in the bottom center of the chip. Look at the image on the left and you'll see that all of the cuts are angled the same.
Old World Style, OWS, chips are removed
with some cuts made very steep, 80 to 90 degrees, and one cut made very shallow, 20-30 degrees. Making cuts like this moves the shadow right up against the steep cuts. Look at the squares on the right image and notice how the shadows are tight against the sides. When compared to the squares on the left image you'll see this distinction.
The following Bethlehem Star has the Gothic leaf shapes carved in OWS.
Look how the shadows hug the outside of each
square.
All of the three corner chips on this trivet are carved in OWS. The center rosette in Swiss style and the rest in OWS. What a great combination.
I carved the bowl shown below for a customer based on a turning and carving at the Vesterheim Museum. There's a Platinum Member video showing how this is carved.
There are a total of 12 Videos showing the OWS technique in the Platinum Video Archive!
