Kevin sent me the picture, shown below, of a piece he's currently working on. You can see that this one contains relief carving, woodburning and chip carving.
I didn't know he did relief carving and it got me thinking.
Kevin's recent project
For many years I've thought about ways to combine chip carving with other wood crafts. The first that I actually did, was chip carve turned bowls. I was able to complete a couple and then that moved on.
Next
I thought about chip carving and scroll saw work and how those two might come together. I never got around to experimenting with it but the thought is still there.
Most recently I've been mesmerized with Kumiko.
Kumiko consists of individual pieces of wood carefully fitted together to form a pattern.
I thought creating a box like this and then chip carving the sides would be wonderful!
And then...
not long ago I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and was pleasantly surprised to see this combination come to life!
