Professionals Practice Until They Can't Get It Wrong
I read a bit about the use, variations and history of this saying. There are records of it going back to the early 1900's and it was written is many different ways.
The saying was used when it came to practicing music, sports and even spelling. So I pondered about how this applied to these various fields.
When playing a particular piece of music, do professionals
practice until they can't play a wrong note or mess up the volume/emphasis (clearly I don't know music :-) My dad's neighbors are professional musicians and will play the background music in Lion King and other productions. He's told me he will watch a movie on his phone while the performance is happening!
I think a professional basketball player can practice free throws until they can't get it wrong. "Wrong" in this case might mean missing 5 - 10% of the
time.
Spelling? Last year's winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, 14-year old, Harini Logan, won in a final spell-off, spelling 22 words correctly in 90 seconds!
"The words that Logan spelt correctly in the final round were spealbone, phreatophyte, gaydiang, parison, excimer, toquilla, glochis, epaulement, chara, maieutic,
chalicothere, teosinte, bouchal, saccharose, talisay, vesicate, chorepiscopus, kniphofia, malbrouck, ornithorhynchus, nandubay and moorhen, according to Scripps National Spelling Bee's website.
The words that were not spelled correctly by Harini Logan were sisserary, akore, semmet and hottish. Furthermore, Logan's other words spelt correctly
included charadriiform, ditalini, tauromachian and sereh."
I'd say Logan is a professional, wouldn't you!
So what about chip carving? Is there a difference between "getting it right"
and "not getting it wrong"?
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Let me know and then next week I'll revisit this interesting statement.

Do you have sore hands?
Hand fatigue and health.
1. Carving with your work on your lap so your upper body leans over the top allows your upper body muscles to do more work rather than small hand muscles
2. Build up your endurance
gradually.
3. General upper body
exercises help. Push ups, arm/wrist curls, triceps extensions, etc.
4. If it hurts, stop. See 1-3.
I didn't show you this quick video from last month's project.
