If you've read many of my emails, watched one of my online videos, finished one of my Courses or had a class in person with me, you know that I'll regularly talk about sharpening and how the Scary Sharp
Sharpening Kit is a sure ticket to getting the Scariest Sharp knife possible.
And you'll also know that I spend time most every day in my shop making products, assembling and sharpening knives as well as creating custom products for orders.
This past week I'd put off sharpening the knives on my jointer long enough. It's not a quick project but I knew it had to be done. So I disassembled the cutter head and removed the knives,
sharpened and honed the knives and reinstalled them and set the height. When I was done and jointed my first boards I wondered why I'd waited so long!!!
Here are a couple of pics of boards before shown on the left, and jointed on the right. Just like a Scary Sharp Chip Carving Knife, the jointed surface is glassy smooth and flat. I wish you could run your finger across the edge and get the real feel!
Whether its your jointer, table saw, planer or chip carving knife, don't put off sharpening yours like I did!

"Hi Marty..... When is it a good time to strop my knife .... Not dull but I want to make sure it stays sharp? This may seem silly but I cant seem to
find a comfortable position to work in. Any suggestions?"
My reply...
1. Stropping your knife every 20 minutes (called "honing") while carving will maintain the sharp edge achieved with the Scary Sharp Sharpening Kit.
Use the countdown method in the same way used to
sharpen your knife. You probably can start at 7 and count down. 7-7, 6-6, 5-5...1-1
2. Comfortable position for carving - Wherever you'll be carving, make sure you have good lighting, either natural light or bright LED daylight bulb light.
An office chair (without arms) or a kitchen table
chair is a common choice for seating although a recliner can be used.
Use some type of lapboard (1/4" hardboard, 12x24" is what I provide for my students).
Lean over the lapboard so you're positioned above your work. This should result in a comfortable and efficient
position for carving.
George busted out these new pieces!
Very nice, George!
