I've got a few things to show you that I came across this past week.
First, here's a post from Bernat, @woodberncarvings.
I was first drawn to his carving years ago when he posted
some of his carved trophies. They were creative and well done. This recent post shows some of his talent.
You'll notice that after staining, Bernat removes the stained wood with a chisel from the top of the letters to make them stand out and provide contrast. Use your phone to scan the code, top right, to watch this process.
While he finds success with this method, I'd suggest you follow the method I've taught for a long time. Reason being, it's easier!
Seal the wood using a sanding sealer
for a golden look. Or use spray lacquer or matte acrylic to keep the basswood whiter.
Apply gel stain in the recesses and wipe of any stain that gets on the surface.
Let dry overnight.
Reapply stain as desired.
Apply final clear top coat.
This finishing method and many more are clearly demonstrated in the Finishing Course.
The Finishing Course ($39.95 value) is included with your Platinum Membership along with everything else I've created to help you with your chip carving!
Check out the chip carved designs from Niko, shown below. Study them a bit and think about what makes the patterns work, resulting in beautiful chip carvings.
So what did you come up with? What makes these good designs?
Here's what I think...
Good variety between large and small chips.
The long rays joining in the middle are broken up nicely with swirls, arcs and circles.
Strong shadows created.
Textured positive space softens the background to create a pleasant transition to the negative carving.
Niko took
a quality photo of these pieces that accentuates the shadows and reveals his quality chip carving. Well done!

Kevin continues his creative work!
Combining laser, woodburning and chip carving led to this piece. Do you see the illusion in the center?
When you buy a 9x14 Wall Cross from the Store, you'll get a full 1" thick clear basswood cross. It makes a big difference in appearance when compared to a
lumber yard standard 3/4" board.
