The new project for this month, the 9x14 cross, is carved in the Geometric style of chip carving. While it can be carved Swiss style (all cuts at the same angle), I gave you the opportunity to learn something and try a new style of chip carving. Stretch your wings a
bit!
Please understand one thing first: if you are new to chip carving, I suggest you stick with the Swiss style until your confidence level is quite high. Adding something new to the mix isn't wise for beginning chip carvers. Doing so will likely lead to confusion and frustration.
Geometric carving is popular in Eastern Europe, Russia and Ukraine. Often cuts are made
using a knife in one of the following styles.
While this style of knife is shown being used in most videos you'll watch, Geometric carving can be done successfully with your MyChipCarving Modified Knife. There's NO need to buy more tools to try this style of carving!
In Tuesday's webinar I showed everyone how to Geometrically chip carve the following shapes using your MyChipCarving Modified Knife!
And in this month's video you'll learn how to carve these shapes on the cross.
It's quite fun if you're wanting to try something different. But I'll repeat these words of caution: Don't try this Geometric style of chip carving if you haven't already reached a solid comfort level with the Swiss style of chip carving!
BH's son is Geometrically Gifted!
When Brian heard I'd be talking about Geometric Chip Carving, he sent me a picture of what his son has been carving. Check it out!
Watch this month's new video and webinar along with a LOT of other videos, patterns, courses to help you with your chip carving.
When you buy a 9x14 Wall Cross from the Store, you'll get a full 1" thick clear basswood cross. It makes a big difference in appearance when compared to a
lumber yard standard 3/4" board.
In the Summer Issue Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine I'm giving away (see below), it was brought to my attention that the staff writers suggest pushing the sharp edge INTO the abrasives when sharpening.
