So many of
you replied with an answer to my question! Thank you!
You'll find some of them below and others in future emails.
When you share your work with me and I share it with others, EVERYONE gets inspired!! Thank you!
But first, DON'T
neglect this!
As I was completing the final carvings for the Positive / Negative Image Chip Carving Course, I was doing clean-up on each pattern and realized that I don't mention this final step nearly enough.
Careful CLEAN-UP!
The goal when removing all chips is
to put your knife into the wood as few times as possible. 2 cuts for 2-sided chips, 3 cuts for 3-corner chips and so on. This is the "goal" but it is not attainable all the time.
There's always a little bit of wood left in the bottom of some chips. It just happens and there's nothing to be ashamed about when it does.
But...it's way to easy to disregard this last
step as unimportant, rush through it and not pay attention to what you're doing. Approaching Careful CLEAN-UP in this way will leave you with a finished carving at a lower quality than it could have been by giving CLEAN-UP the attention it deserves.
Here are 5 CLEAN-UP Tips to keep in mind. 😱
Don't scrape out any remaining wood.
Hold your knife exactly the same way and
at the same angle as you did when making the first cut. You want the cutting angles to match!
Take your time! Don't rush your CLEAN-UP cuts.
As often as possible, make these cuts with-the-grain. Get out your deck of cards to determine grain direction on angled cuts as needed.
CLEAN-UP areas of chip out and tear out following the tips provided in the Chip Out Course.
Consider printing out these
tips and keeping them nearby as a reminder.

You can't tell from the picture, but our Red Barn is actually a faded pinkish color. As I type it is being repainted under warranty. We're excited to have it RED again. Chip doesn't care either way.
