Like any good teacher, I'm following up with you on last week's assignment.
Your homework was to make some chips and send me a picture of your
work.
Trust me, I know your excuse. I've heard everyone of them over my teaching career. Once I even got the excuse that, "Mr. Leenhouts, I did my work, but the dog ate my homework." Of course I didn't believe her (come to find out it really was true).
In last week's homework, I would've believe you if you told me your dog ate it, because a few years ago, my dog
Chip, who was only a few months old at the time, ate my carving (just completed) while I was working with my back to him! Many of you will remember this story...here's the results of his destruction...and I wasn't even that mad at him...I don't know why...
But there was ONE student who completed the assignment. Congratulations goes out to Bob! Here's what he had
to say...
Hi Marty,
Attached is my pile of chips.
I am working on the rosette coasters for practice. This is my 4th coaster. It’s much better than my first, I am improving with practice. But still needs work. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob
Here's your feedback, Bob!
Well done for making more chips this week and working on your 4th coaster.
A couple questions:
Have you already completed the Chip Carving Essentials Course? I'm going to guess, yes, but just making sure.
Next, working on these coaster patterns is fine. But I'd also suggest you work on the Deliberate Practice Course at the same time. That way, you're continuing to
develop your technique while at the same time challenging yourself with these fun coaster patterns.
I'd say you're off to a good start and the future looks bright for you!

Hi
Marty,
You asked to see what folks have been carving, so I'm sending some photos of a couple of things I did this summer. Both are done on 16" plates.
One has a quote by Rumi, a 13th century Sufi poet. The rosette is adapted from an Arabic design. I wanted it and the border to stand out so I used stain on them, and just an oil-based finish on the rest. The font was pretty difficult to carve and space so I wouldn't
recommend it.
The other has lines from the well-known poem "Desiderata". The rosette is based on Gothic rose window designs. The font is called Aesop Plus and is easy & fun to carve.
Thanks as always for your instruction and inspiration!
Best regards, Mitch Lang
And these are from Sue G., (Platinum Member) who has been holding out on us!! j/k
Sue, I'm so glad you shared these with us. Thank you :-)
Marty,
Attached are 3 plates that I have carved recently.
Thank you for all your help
through your videos.
Sue Graziadio
It's clear that Sue has mastered good carving and finishing technique. When you look at the plate you see the consistent angles in her carving and admire the beauty. The finish is even, no blotching and the color compliments the carving and is not distracting!
Super nice!

Marty,
I’ve been splitting my time between chip carving and character carving. Here is my latest plate.
I have started to create this year’s collection of chip carved ornaments to give away.
Keith
Keith got a LOT of 3-corner chip practice when carving this plate. I'm tempted to count them...hmmmm...Okay I will...
Guess how many chips total on this plate? (Answer at the end of this email)
You don't have to be a Platinum Member to submit your work to me.
So why are most of the posts from Platinum Members??
I think it's because Members' confidence level is higher than before Platinum because they've gone through some Courses, watched some videos, chip carved several projects and attended some live
webinars.
