Last week I shared with you how you don't have to have any artistic ability to enjoy chip carving. Look below and you'll see how Nancy is a self-proclaimed "non artist" who chip carves a lot of wonderful items.
Another thing that makes chip carving appealing to many of us, is that it doesn't require a big bank roll to get started!
It doesn't take any artistic ability.
In months, not years, you can create some nice carvings.
It's affordable to get started.
Chip carving goes where you go! No shop
required!
Chip carved items make great gifts.
I first started chip carving in 1985 when Shelley and I were teaching at Brainerd Indian School, a 7-12 grade boarding school for Native American kids in Hot Springs, SD. We lived above the boys dormitory with our newborn daughter, Bethany. We didn't have much money but we didn't care. All of our needs were met.
To get started with chip carving I bought the VHS tape that Wayne Barton created and made myself a knife. It wasn't long before I bought a Klotzli Knife so I could chip carve the right way 🙂. I was teaching shop at the time so I had access to white pine which was good enough to start with.
I probably had $30 total invested and was on my way. ALL patterns and designs were hand drawn so I was able to use the
drafting supplies I had saved from school without any more expense.
Yes, that was a long time ago and prices have inflated quite a lot since then. But in spite of price increases, getting started in chip carving is still very affordable for most people.
Consider the following...for yourself OR as a gift for someone else!
The following reads like an advertisement. The intent is to get someone started in chip carving. Like I say at the end of each video, "Introduce a kid, to chip carving!"
ANYONE can try chip carving for FREE!(just pay shipping)
Try chip carving for 4 weeks! Basswood boards, patterns, instruction videos, book and the use of tools included. (Just cover the shipping. We don't make any profit on this.)
Get it for yourself if you've been dragging your feet.
Or gift it to a friend who's shown a bit of an interest!
I am glad that you shared that there are others like me that have no artistic ability. I have been able to use your patterns and revamp them into my projects and I thank you for having so many patterns. I am so
glad that you keep using the sleigh pattern that I sent many years ago. I am just finishing it so that I can send it to a friend by Dec 1 if not sooner. I was not crazy about the pattern but used it
for the inside of the sleigh and used a previous pattern for the outside. It turned out really nice, and I am happy with it. I love your website and the PAM projects and hope that you
continue to do them. I look forward to what you are doing next. Right now I have a few projects that I need to do but life gets very busy and I do not always have time, retirement is too busy. Nancy Anderson
Carl is keep his knife busy!
Marty,
Thanks for remembering me with the knife box.
You asked for submissions. I think I've sent the book rack before, yet it is one of my proudest projects, the patience and precision... almost no break
outs!! And it holds an honored position on my desk.
And I couldn't help but include the Lions with border, even though it has some stain mottling. You do a great job of stewarding the community. Thank you
Best always, Carl
Bill goes a bit beyond the norm
Marty, the attached picture is taking chip carving a bit farther. We just came back from New Mexico, and I seen this cross and thought it would be a nice piece to carve. I just carved it, and seen your request for home work. So here it is.
Charles' Advent Plate
Charles told me that others like this carved plate so much that he ordered another along with a Christmas Sleigh! Way to go!

Shelley and Bethany and the kids were packing Christmas boxes for Samaritan's purse, when Chip grabbed a toy or two and ran off. Here he is with one of his prizes.
