In the December Live Webinar, next
Tuesday, I'll show you how to chip carve the BoltonLight font used for the lettering on this month's project! Do you like it as much as I do?
On the back I did something new for the first time. Usually if I add any lettering I'll chip carve it. But for this one I decided to add the text with my Pattern Transfer Tool. It turned out super nice! And seeing as I was pressed for time to get it done, it helped in that regard too.
The small ones are from the November Carve-Along Webinar.
Carl took a different approach when carving and finishing his ornaments.
Mine are carved Geometric style where a large shallow 3-corner chip is first removed and then multiple chips are removed inside that shallow chip.
Carl divided the large chip into 3 chips and carved his in traditional Swiss style.
My finish is sealer and clear coat whereas his is metallic gold and sapphire blue acrylic
paint.
Each style is creative, unique and beautiful.
Doug is aiming for GOLD! 🥇
Hello Marty.
Not carving anything, but spent most of the day planing basswood. I had 7 large logs from the acreage in northern Wisconsin brought down to Cedar Rapids, milled and air dried. Once that is complete, I will start
planning my next carving. I want to enter the Vesterheim gold medal competition next Spring. I got 5 points a year ago and I need a total of 8 for the gold medal.

Seeking to get your Vesterheim gold medal is a good way to improve your chip carving skills. It forces you to consider the pattern and layout along with executing good chip carving
technique.
My gold medal pin is around here somewhere. Like you, Doug, it was something I wanted to achieve and I set my mind to do it.
One word of caution: Don't necessarily take the judges scores and comments to heart. Some of the judges that scored my submissions were not chip carvers. It may have changed since then. 😉
"Introduce a kid to chip carving!".
Ron has heard me say this every time at the end of my videos.
Great thing is he's not just hearing it...HE'S DOING IT!
It's just great to see how intent his grandson is watching him!
Jon Gedhill's One-Piece Book Holder
A while back I shared with you this same Book Holder carved by Bill. Here's Jon's carving of this unique piece.
This carving was the very first project I had published in WoodCarving
Illustrated quite a few years ago. It sits in my shop display case with the open magazine on top.
