The December project was specifically designed with the message "IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS".
Last week I told you Troy will be the new owner of MyChipCarving on January
1st.
It's fitting that I GIVE THANKS for the many ways God has blessed me during the past 16+ years (in no particular order.)
I THANK GOD FOR you, , and your support, following and friendship over the years. Whether you've reached out to me regularly, seldom or never,
just reading today's message is important.
I THANK GOD FOR the opportune time when I started MCC. YouTube was relatively new when I started creating videos, online tutorials were beginning and I happened to get a solid domain name and get a first page Google ranking quite easily.
I haven't done a Google search for "chip carving" in a long time, so I just did one. MyChipCarving is
still on page one with images and the MyChipCarving YouTube channel (because Google owns YouTube). Out of curiosity I clicked on "Chip Carving Basics for Beginners - YouTube" and was disappointed and shocked to see this image at the start of a Beaver Craft video.
What??? Do you want to teach people to chip carve or SCARE them away!! And this is the FIRST thing they show!!! Terrible!!!!
okay...enough about that. 😜 btw, I've never cut myself in over 38 years of chip carving. Not to brag, just to show that good technique = safe carving! No safety tape needed 😜
I THANK GOD FOR teaching school online while creating this business. I learned a lot about developing online materials, posting them and creating engaging lessons.
I THANK GOD FOR Bethany's work applying patterns and shipping orders promptly. She will continue working with Troy to provide these valuable services.
I THANK GOD
FOR Shelley's encouragement to write my own book, sell my own knives and tell me how much she enjoyed each Saturday email.
I THANK GOD FOR my parents. For my dad's positivity regarding my work, emails and when joining me at shows and classes. And for my mom (blessed memory) giving away several of my carvings to friends and regularly handing out my books.
I THANK GOD FOR great vendors that make quality basswood items for the Store.
i.e. boxes, frames, plates, knife boxes, basswood boards.
I THANK GOD FOR Troy's desire to continue, grow and develop what I've been able to start!
I THANK GOD FOR helping me develop the Scary Sharp Sharpening Kit. This has
been so important when it comes to helping you and others succeed at chip carving.
IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS!

While in Utah for Christmas at Paul's, he had this wine bottle holder
on the counter. I'd forgotten that I carved it so I snapped a few pics. They were into flamingos at the time. 😀
Matt does it "backwards" 😂not recommended 😂
Happy Sunday, Marty!
I wanted to share progress. We spoke for a few minutes
about items for me to practice on.
I ended up selecting several including the coasters and practice boards.
Since I do most everything backwards I started on the coasters! I was excited to have a thing to do, not just more random cuts. I'll go back to the practice boardssoon as it's obvious I need much more of that.
I did one carving and found my
knife isn't flexing to get the curves on deep cuts. I'll have to consider your modified knife if I want to have smooth curves it seems. Importantly I'm learning as I go and having fun. Thecoastersare great because they don't take long to be done. Whether I'm happy with it or not, it's soon done!
Enough talk, picture included of a
pair of inverse pattern. One complete and another started.
Sincerely, Matt
Non-chip carving from Morris
Many of us, myself included, do other styles of carving on occasion. This is from Morris, longtime friend of MyChipCarving.
Marty, As you can see, this is a long way from chip carving, but the chip carving knife did a lot of it. The wood is caltapa. I was going to make this out of butternut, but the price difference swayed my choice. The catalpa carved good. A little bit stringy, but not too bad. It is not a solid piece. That keeps the weight down, and makes it easier to deal with. I used artist acrylic paint to give it a little color. I'm definitely no artist. You ever get to Indianapolis
let me know. We will take a coffee break and swap a few stories. Take care, Morris
