A Winning Combination!!

Howdy !

The past few weeks I've wrote about finishing with stain or paint, but how about both for a winning combination! You may be familiar with the term 'antiquing', which is adding a light stain to your carving to give it an older/antique appearance. I sometimes like to do this on my painted carvings, too.

It's a great way to help soften brighter colors, and to accentuate lighter colors. If I plan on doing this I sometimes will use lighter color paint for the carved areas, and darker paint for flat areas. It's not a hard and fast rule, but using lighter colors in the carved areas allows the stain to darken the valleys of the cut and bring more attention to it.

If you've ever wondered about using metallic paints but didn't want to buy all new paint, then you may want to look into some acrylic pearlescent mixing medium. You simply add it to any paint to achieve a pearlescent/metallic look. I normally use around 1:1 ratio. If you do give it a try, lighter colors won't show the pearlescent/metallic shimmer as noticeably as darker colors, but it is fun to try it out on any paint, especially without having to buy any new paint!

However you want to finish your carvings, whether it stain, paint, both, or just leaving it natural, keep on carving!

I haven't chip carved (or in the round either) much recently but regarding finishing I did a couple chip carvings of flowers and colored them with oil color pencils...was just trying it out. I had sprayed them with clear acrylic first and then used the pencils (not IN the chips but around them) to color them in and they (2 of them) turned out very nice. Sorry I don't have a picture I could send at the moment.

Mia has a ruff life!

For those who knew Marty Leenhouts father...

Those of you who were fortunate enough to meet Marty's father during one of his classes, shows, etc. Marty asked me to share with you that his father, Richard Leenhouts, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, February 21, 2024, surrounded by his family and friends.

As you can see from this picture, his father loved Chip.

Please keep Marty and his family in your prayers. May God bless Marty and his family during this difficult time, and grant them His comfort and peace.
