Are chip carving skills and techniques interesting? Yes!
Howdy !
Every Olympics I'm always amazed at the wide variety of sports that are included. While watching well-known events with recognizable athletes is always fun, I enjoy the lesser-known events just as much. It's interesting learning about the skills needed for the event, and the practice and dedication required to become one of the
few people to participate in the Olympics.
I don't expect chip carving to become an Olympic sport (at least I hope not!), but the chip carving skills and techniques you learn and practice can be just as fascinating to others as the Olympic sports (although without any endorsement deals 😢). I have a friend who is extremely knowledgeable about 3D printing, laser cutting, telescopes, and many other technical and artistic fields and is always excited to see my latest carving.
Why? Because chip carving is something entirely new to him. He can't believe it is all done by hand with a single knife. When I explain the various cuts, angles, grain direction, and techniques, he is genuinely interested in learning about it all. He now knows what a 3 corner chip is!
Even though there likely won't be any Olympic medals for chip carving in the future, I hope you find satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment in the skills and techniques you've
learned along your chip carving journey.
Do you have a good story about introducing chip carving to a friend?
In my last school year In Switzerland I took Wood & Metal work. I was 15 years old when I was introduced to simple chip carving. The project was to make a chest out of Cherry wood and all the metal hardware that goes with it. We had to decorate it with chip carving,
initials and the year.
cheers
Werner:
Thanks for the email, Werner! That's a nice-looking chest! The chip carving is nicely done - especially the lettering and numbering - those skills usually take a lot of time and practice.
What a first project! I don't think any of the shop classes in today's schools would incorporate chip carving.
Christmas Ornament Blanks
There are a variety of shapes available for individual purchase.
NOTE: These do not have patterns applied, and do not include ribbons and eye screws
I just completed the finishing process on three custom knife boxes.
The dark background on the large box was
textured and gel stained. I wouldn't recommend texturing after assembly like I did. The sides aren't supported when texturing and the risk of cracking the sides is a concern.
I also finish turned and carved a small paper clip bowl that Shelley took to work for her desk.
Fun stuff!!
What a beautiful box and striking finish! I'm sure Shelley is enjoying the paper clip bowl. Thank you for sharing!
