What challenges have you tackled in your projects?
Howdy !
This week my wife and I moved our daughter into her first apartment as she begins her second year of college. Things were easier than moving into her dorm last year, although the 108° temperature wasn't ideal. 🥵 While the temperature was challenging, it wasn't the reason for this week's topic. So what was the challenge that
inspired this week's topic?.... Packing.
My daughter had a pile of items and it was my job to figure out how to make everything fit in one carload. Challenge accepted!
I think every family has at least one person (at least that's what I tell myself 😂) with what my daughter calls the 'Tetris' gene - the desire to pack items in such a way as to minimize the space needed. My 'Tetris' gene was tested this time, but everything made
it!
The sense of accomplishment reminded me of carvings I wasn't sure I could do. Whether it was a first-time attempt at lettering, a free-form pattern, or trying out a new finishing technique, I always felt good after completing each project. The outcomes weren't perfect (they never are), and there were some frustrations along the way, but I knew I was learning new things and opening doors to a wider range of
projects. Besides, carving challenges in a climate-controlled environment is more enjoyable than packing challenges in the heat!
My solution to the issues you described is different. I start by taking a picture of the item to carve, then bring it onto my computer where I can create/overlay the pattern onto it to see how it lines up. Then I can make any adjustments needed before printing, and I know exactly how it’ll all fit once applied and carved. I find this is
especially needed on the six-pointed ornaments, which can be quite variable.
I use a Pattern Transfer Tool and reverse the pattern before printing. I also make sure to do any sanding of edges before taking the picture because that can significantly change how the pattern fits on the wood. I’ve been bitten by that before.
