Howdy !
Â
Have you ever had an idea but could never find the time to work on it? And when you think you’ll have some time to pursue it, something comes up to occupy that time so the idea gets put on the backburner again. That's been the case for me several times this year, but I finally forced myself to get to one of those ideas this past
week by making it the topic of the Platinum Member webinar.
Â
What was that idea, you ask?? A chip-carved cookie mold! While showing a friend some of my carvings he mentioned carved cookie molds. I'd never heard of such a thing, so he showed me some of his wife's cookie molds which were quite detailed. They were power-carved so they weren't chip carving patterns, but the idea was intriguing.Â
Â
It took some time, and trial and error to come up with a couple
of patterns to choose from, but mission accomplished! The challenge was viewing a pattern and realizing I needed to carve the inverse so the design would be raised on the cookie. Below is what I came up with for the first attempt:
Â
I still need to apply a food-safe finish, such a mineral oil, and do a kitchen test, but it felt good to finally give it a go. And it was fun!
8 inch Flat Plate with 8 Point Rosette and Leaf Pattern
Â
This is the same pattern I carved on my Vesterheim candle plate with the addition of the 8 Point Rosette. It's a challenging pattern, but one of my favorites! I hope you'll enjoy it too!
Â
NEW!!
I've added the option to order the plate with the pattern applied!
Â
On the Plain Edge Flat Plate page, select a Size of 8", and then select the Pattern8 Point Rosette and Leaf.
In part because of your original email, I've decided to participate in person in the Utah Valley Woodcarving Show in Spanish Fork, Utah, this month. Â
Â
I'll also have a table promoting our local carving club and my chip
carving classes.Â
Â
Last Saturday I spearheaded a booth at our local Peach Days weekend (the annual city-sponsored fair) promoting our club. It was a lot of fun interacting with the public and showing various styles of carving.Â
Â
At the booth, I had a couple of chip carving practice boards and two of the refurbished knives I'd bought from MCC so people could try their hand at chip carving. Both kids and adults
really enjoyed it.
Â
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for helping motivate me to make the step of of my comfort zone and do something more.
Â
I also thought you'd enjoy seeing the awards my MCC carvings recieved at the Peach Days Fine Arts show. :-)
Â
Best wishes and many thanks,
Jon
Â
Thanks for your email Jon! That's a really nice setup which I'm sure received a lot of attention. I especially like the carving table where everyone can give carving a try. An excellent way to introduce folks, young and old, to chip carving!
Â
Congratulations on the well-deserved awards for your carvings!!
