...that each My Chip Carving knife is handmade! Since a lot of effort goes into making each knife I was glad when I received the following email from Michael asking how to protect it:
I have your diamond deluxe knife and love it. Do you have a protective sheath for the blade? If not, can
you recommend one?
Before I share my response, I thought it would be fun to go a little more in-depth on what goes into making a My Chip Carving knife.
First, I'll start with the blades. The knife blanks have been waterjet cut, followed by bevel grinding, and finally stonewashed and polished by vendors here in the US. Don't expect to see me on an episode of Forged in Fire creating knife blades. 😜
Next, I use a sharpening
machine to put an initial edge on the blade individually. By sharpening at this stage, it is easier to achieve a consistent angle on both sides.
The knife scales(handles) are then epoxied onto the blade in a specific order so that either rivets or mosaic pins can be lined up properly. Once both sides of the handles have been applied and riveted(for Deluxe knives), the handles are sanded and routed to shape.
At this point, the 60-degree thumb notches are
added to each side for both right and left-handed carvers.
A final sanding and hand-rubbed oil finish is followed by one last sharpening. Before a knife is ready for the store, a test cut is made to make sure it's scary sharp!
Getting back to Michael's question on protecting the knife, here's my response:
I am glad you are enjoying your diamond deluxe knife! I don't have any sheaths available in the store, only the Double Knife Box, which is what I keep my knives in.
After learning about the knife-making process and the steps involved, I think you can understand why I was happy to receive a question on how to protect one. 😂
Even though it's a lengthy process to make a knife, it's all worth it at the end knowing it will be used to create beautiful carvings in the hand of a chip carver like you!
What have you been creating with your chip carving knife?

Another Useful and Fun Item!
Hi Troy!
One of the things I love most about chip carving is that it can turn a regular item into a cherished treasure that gets used frequently. Instead of taking up space on a wall or shelf and just sitting there, these items get touched and used
often.
It's always rewarding to visit homes of those I've carved "useful" things for, and find those carved items still in use.
One of my favorite projects was this napkin holder. The dovetails are hand-carved as well, and are tight enough that it holds together well for everyday use, but can be disassembled and reassembled like a puzzle.
Have a great
week!
Jon
Thanks for the email, Jon!
Great work as always, and very creative! I especially like the layers on the top and bottom rosettes, it gives an awesome 3D effect. I've never attempted dovetails, but know it takes skill to get them to fit that nicely.
Well done!
Two Different Styles of Napkin Holders Available in the Store
While you won't find any dovetailed napkin holders, there's a napkin holder with a base, and another with dowels to choose from!
Hi Troy! I carved 3 of the wall clocks. Seemed to be a well-liked pattern. One of my clocks went to The Netherlands. The phone holder is nice, but I would have to get a phone first! I am a land line lady with a working rotary dial phone....honest! I am not into
all this modern technology. I like plain and simple in my life.
Enjoy a great week!!
Dar
Hi Darlene,
Nothing wrong with plain and simple! Fewer
headaches and frustrations that way. 🙂
I always thought dialing on the rotary phones was much more fun than the push buttons...unless I messed up the last number and had to do it all over again. 😆
A Few Clearance Knives Still Available
I placed a few knives in the clearance section earlier this week. These knives had a few issues with the handles, but the blades are fine. The knives with a red Xhave already sold.
