You’ll see below that December’s project is a wine bottle holder with a floral pattern. Today, I want to take you through the design process of how I arrived at the border pattern.
I thought about looking through existing border patterns but then decided it would be a fun challenge to find a way to tie
the border to the main pattern. So here’s what I did…
Given the width of the sides of the Wine Bottle Holder the design would have to be somewhat narrow. I liked the uncarved corner shown in red.
One option was to keep one side parallel to the edge and put two of the shapes back-to-back, and then alternating on each side:
Seeing it again, it looks pretty good and I may file it away for use in a future project... But I wondered how it would look if I took one of the corner shapes and then rotated it 45 degrees:
Not bad
either, but not what I was looking for, so I then had the idea to keep the shape at 45 degrees but alternate them on each side.
Now that’s more like it! I liked the look and thought it was a cool way to incorporate the corner shape into the edge design. I ultimately decided to leave the joined corner shapes uncarved
and carve the areas around them to make them a positive image. Because the edge is narrow and can be a bit challenging to carve I chose to separate the negative area into 2 smaller sections.
As I was carving the pattern it suddenly hit me that they look like whale tails!🐋 It’s not exactly what I was shooting for, but
I was happy (and pleasantly surprised) with the final result.
The original corner shape may not be easy to pick out anymore, but it’s there. So that’s the story behind the ‘whale-tail’ border.
