Learn about what captured my eye in this month's pattern.
Howdy !
As you’ll see later in this newsletter, this month’s project is based on a Pompeian ornament. I was drawn to the variety of shapes and the challenge of determining a way to carve them. It reminded me that being able to decide how to carve a particular pattern is part of the fun of chip carving!
Although the
pattern doesn’t contain three-corner chips there are still straight lines that flow between elements. By varying carving techniques, the lines were formed by a combination of ridges(peaks) and valleys.
It would have been just as easy to create the lines with only ridges(peaks) or valleys, but the idea of using a combination appealed to me for some reason. But that’s just me, the fun part is that you can carve it differently based on what appeals to you!
A different take on the design you sent me. I am deliberately sanding/scuffing edges and paid no attention to correcting my mistakes to create a piece that feels like it has been around awhile. Still have
some work to do but thought you might be interested in how it turned out.
Like I said in my last email, this is a different take. I need to clean out some of the dust in the cuts and seal it, but here's a look at it almost done.
The entire project was an experiment. I used Mahogany stain, and then evened it out with a furniture touchup marker. As you know, basswood doesn't stain evenly. Going over the lighter areas with the stain marker allows for a more even looking product and keeps me from darkening the other areas. For the green, I first rough sanded with a Tombow eraser and then used acrylic paint. Caliart has a 52 color set that has great
colors and requires only one coat. After it dries, I will use a can of compressed air to blow out all the remaining dust from the Tombow sanding. I will seal it with a spray-on, matte polyurethane.
The plate will be hung above two vining house plants with two other plates I've done. The mahogany makes the green pop, the green ties it into the plants.
Thank you for your email Christopher. Wow! That green sure does pop! You did a fabulous job applying it to help accentuate the fine details. Thanks for sharing how you approached and finished this project. Keep up the great work!
