See How I Tested My New Cookie Molds – Sweet Results and Tips Inside! 🍪
Howdy !
A few newsletters ago I discussed carving cookie molds during the monthly Platinum member webinar. I finally finished them off and took them for a test spin. Here are my results!
First, a quick recap: I started with 1/2-inch-thick blanks to help prevent any warping and withstand the repeated pressing of dough.
While designing patterns I needed to remind myself that the negative (carved out) areas would be raised on the cookie. This led to a variety of patterns to find out what would work best.
Once carved, I glued a ball knob to the backside of the mold and applied a butcher block (mineral) oil to the wood since it is a food-safe finish.
I used a Scottish shortbread recipe to test how the molds would work. There was a small learning curve in pressing the dough to prevent sticking. Sprinkling some powdered sugar on the mold before pressing helped prevent the dough from sticking. Chilling the dough was also supposed to help, but I was too impatient to wait.😉
I was satisfied with the results and considered the test a success, so I plan to try more. If you’re thinking of giving it a try, bigger (deeper) chips gave the best results (big surprise, right? 🤣).
You encourage us to share pics of our projects. I had one ornament blank from last year with the hexagon pattern. An idea was rumbling around in my head after finishing my last Candy Jar, and I needed a small, fun
project. So this is what resulted. I think combining the geometric carved with the simple star works well. Plus after reading your coaching on sealing with three coats before painting, I was hankering to try adding acrylic paints for the pop. This is nowhere near my best technical and knife work, but I like the creativity, and the fun of the colors. Just sharing.
The top color is Amethyst, a metallic light purple. It's an interesting color, because with the
metallic and the color pigment, different light angles create different color shifts.
I had the ornament hanging on my desk lamp and noticed the amethyst color in natural daylight, so I decided to try another pic to illustrate the truer color. (Left picture below)
Best regards, Carl
Thank you for your email Carl! The amethyst color on the top carving really does look different in the different settings. I really enjoy the clean paint lines on each of the carvings. Very well done!!
