I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I enjoyed time with family, and Mia continues to enjoy the extra trimmings from the Christmas ham. 😂 And just like that, the calendar is heading toward a new year.
The new year will mark my first anniversary as the owner of My Chip Carving, and what a year it’s been!
Getting to know everyone in the My Chip Carving community has been great. Marty was spot on when he told me what a fabulous and supportive group it is. Thank you for all the support and encouragement you’ve provided through your emails and calls, and for sharing your projects and knowledge, too!
I look forward to another year of projects and webinars and seeing your latest projects!
Couple of things - First, pics attached of my just completed Give Thanks trivet. I made it for a friend, and she had mentioned preferring
stained wood finish, so no advanced techniques. Second, I used the Rustoleum High Temperature paint, and it was glossy. So I buffed the sheen down with fine steel wool. Another friend complained that he liked the glossy look. I tried to explain to him my guru mentor, Marty the MAN! had taught me a satin finish reveals the carve patterns better. But he just wasn't sophisticated enough to hear it! LOL Third, I got a
little uppity and decided I wanted to put rubber feet on it instead of the wood button dowels. I hope it doesn't hurt your feelings!
Next, I REALLY enjoyed carving this project, and totally communed with my MCC Knives, using the Modified for most of the work. I keep them in excellent shape, and only have to tune them up on my 8" x 2" bench strop with green compound. What's that you
say? Scary sharp? It was a joy working on this project and I realized a significant part of it was respecting and enjoying the mastery in these knives! Thank you for your gift of dedication and love to the MCC Community!
It has to be really
rewarding for you to see images of projects you guys created and stewarded to their respective craftsperson. Marty got the ball rolling, and you are continuing the culture of excellence. I am looking forward to carving your 8" flat plate with 8 point Rosette and Leaf pattern!
Best
always, Carl
Another great-looking project, Carl! I like it without the high-gloss look, and the stain gives it a warm, calming feel to me. The rubber feet are a nice touch and a definite upgrade - the button feet are sold with them because they are more economical and don't require additional hardware.
I'm glad you're enjoying the
MCC knives. It really is a great feeling using a scary sharp knife and keeping it that way!
I'm doing the best I can to keep the ball rolling, so I appreciate hearing your kind words of support and encouragement. It means a lot to me.
Keep up the great work! I can't wait to see your next project!

Counting down to the New Year
Last week I shared Darlene's email about the Woodcarving Seniors in Michigan City, Indiana. One of their members, Kathleen H. carved the following beautiful clock:
I bet it will be pretty cool watching this clock strike midnight on New Year's Eve! Well done!
