This past week, my daughter finished a study abroad adventure in Ireland. While I’m not sure how much time was actually spent studying, she definitely saw plenty of new sights! What really caught my attention, though, was that she sent surprise photos of historic items with Celtic designs—because those patterns reminded her of my chip
carving. Even though she probably won't pick up a chip carving knife herself, it’s meaningful to know she appreciates the art and notices patterns that might inspire future projects.
It got me thinking: how often do friends and family send you pattern ideas out of the blue? Whether it’s a snapshot from a museum, a doodle on a napkin, or a link to something unique, these little moments of inspiration are valuable. Sometimes, the best ideas come from people who know us best—even if they don’t carve themselves!
If you’ve ever been stuck for your next project, don’t overlook the ideas that come from those around you. Next time someone sends you a photo or a pattern suggestion, give it a try! You might discover a new favorite motif or a design that pushes your skills a little further. I’d love to hear about the unique ways inspiration finds you—send your stories or photos to troy@mychipcarving.com!

In a previous newsletter I shared an email about a project involving the carving of a Viking sculpture being completed by Michigan City's (Indiana) Senior Center Woodcarvers. I'm happy to provide the follow-up below that the sculpture is now complete!
As of today, Thor has a permanent home in Michigan City's Norway section of the Ethnic
Gardens. Pictured are Oleif Olsaker, who prepared an area for the Viking and is one of the carvers who created the original Viking years ago and Carver, Darlene H. (We could have used some cooler Viking weather today.) Many thanks to Robert Tylisz and Treven Lotis for transporting Thor to the Gardens and helping to bolt Thor to a secure base, which was built by Robert.
On August 16th at 11:00 a dedication ceremony and potluck luncheon will take place in the
garden. Thor is the result of the workmanship of the Senior Center Woodcarvers.
Yay! Thor looks great! Nice picture, and a nice-looking space.
Thanks for sending this, Dar! It's great to see what a group of carvers can do to contribute to the community!
My family decided they wanted to spend some time with me, so I'll be 'offline' the next 2 weeks with very limited access to email and phone. I'll try to respond to any email and voice messages as quick as I can when I return to the
'office'.
This does NOT affect any orders of in-stock items. Bethany will still be shipping orders as they are received.
Thank you for your patience and
understanding!
