Check out some variations on this month's ornament!
Howdy !
As the old saying goes, "Variety is the spice of life." That certainly rang true during this month's Platinum member webinar, where we dove into creative variations for this year's ornament. It's always exciting to see how a small tweak can change a design’s look—and this time, we had inspiration from both my own ideas and suggestions from
fellow members.
The first variation I tried was carving out the diamond/star shapes and leaving the center sections and half-canoe chips uncarved. The positive image created by the uncarved areas looked completely different from the original pattern. Carving those diamonds/stars was a fun challenge! While I still prefer the classic design, it's always worthwhile to try a new approach and see what happens.
One member suggested using an Old World Style cut to parts of the design(shown below), and we also experimented with stab marks on the diamonds and stars. These extra details brought a fresh look to the ornament and gave me even more ideas for future projects. I plan to carve a few more using these variations alongside the original pattern.
Have you tried your own ornament variations? I’d love to see what you’ve come up with! Feel free to send your photos or stories to troy@mychipcarving.com—it’s always a treat to see the creativity in our community.
August's Monthly Project
2025 Christmas Ornament
This year's pattern is a combination of straight and curved cuts. The curved cuts help create the diamond shapes. A horizontal hole is drilled in the sides at the peak for a ribbon to pass through.
