Take a look at a project finished with color and stain.
Howdy !
I hope you had a Happy Halloween! This month, I had a little extra fun with my chip carving projects by adding some color—just in time for the season. Inspired by Nancy’s recent email, I decided to try colored pencils on my latest carving. It was a quick way to bring out the details without a lot of extra prep, perfect for those of us always short on time.
Once the color was on, I finished my pumpkin
carving with three coats of spray matte acrylic and a layer of gel stain. The stain really helped accentuate the carved areas, and I was surprised at how well the brown pencil matched the General Finishes Nutmeg stain. I left a border of stain around the pumpkin to give it a warm glow, then used a brush to blend it into a soft outline.
I applied the same finishing touches of three coats of spray matte acrylic and gel stain on my ‘Trick Or Treat’ carving, and the results really made the details pop!
Be sure to check out another spooky carving below that also has some color – you won’t be disappointed!
I’ve enjoyed seeing everyone’s latest projects and sharing them here. Please keep them coming!
I thought it was time for another free-form pattern and decided on this flower pattern. It's a nice combination of a few larger chips and other thinner, flowing chips. Leave it natural, or add some color!

A Look Back at one of Carl's Early Pencil Color Projects
Troy,
Sometimes I think simple is better. This plate was for my older daughter's wedding - Thomas' mother. As you can see, it was 9 years ago. I was just ruminating and remembered it as one of my two first pencil color projects. So I thought I'd share it.
I was
impressed with the creativity in your two Halloween projects in the newsletter. It's wonderful to have an MCC Steward who really takes his mentorship seriously. You and Marty are a little different in form and style, but your hearts are cut from the same bolt of cloth. I really appreciate all you do for the MCC Community.
In my work I encourage community, empathy, mutual support, and appreciation. A quote I use is from William James, the "father" of modern psychology:
"The
deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated."
Best regards, Carl
Thank you for sharing, Carl! It only seems appropriate to share one of your early pencil color projects given the number of pencil color projects in the past two newsletters. Looking forward to seeing the next one!
