Howdy !
Â
Christmas is less than a week away! I wanted to take a moment to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. I pray everyone enjoys a safe and blessed holiday with friends and loved ones. 🎄
Â
As I was finishing up the last few ornaments of the year, I noticed something odd—my cuts just weren’t as clean as usual, even
after my typical stropping routine. After a closer look, I realized the strop compound had built up over time, and the tip of my knife wasn’t making full contact with the compound. So, I carefully scraped off the old layers until I was back to fresh leather, reapplied a new coat of compound, and gave it another go. With the tip making solid contact, my knife returned to scary-sharp! It was a good reminder to pay closer attention to the condition of my strop and not just go through the
motions.
Â
Have you learned any lessons about keeping your knife scary sharp? If you have a tip or story, I’d love to hear it—just send a note to troy@mychipcarving.com!

Here’s the trivet that I carved. I am obviously kind of a beginner, but I did have some chip out. I used teak oil then a clear coat sprayed on. Also a pic of the cell phone holder.

Â
Your trivet turned out great! The slight chip-out was in the normal trouble areas, which happens to everyone. The angle and depth of cuts are very consistent, which is great! That can be a hard thing to achieve, especially on some of the larger chips in this pattern. The cell phone holder is equally well done!
Â
I love the even color of the teak oil!
