What to do when you see multiple variations in a pattern.
Howdy !
After wrapping up the pattern design for next month's project, I found myself staring at it a bit longer than usual. The more I looked, the more I saw other possibilities hiding in the lines and shapes. It got me thinking—was my original choice the right one? I even played around with a few alternatives on my computer, but in the end, I stuck
with my first instinct. You'll get to see the final design next week and decide for yourself!
This little design dilemma reminded me that when it comes to chip carving, there really isn’t a right or wrong pattern. Sure, some designs might catch your eye more than others, but that doesn’t make any of them “wrong.” The beauty of chip carving is that you can always try new variations on different projects. It keeps things interesting and helps you discover what really appeals to
you.
Do you ever spot a pattern and immediately start imagining the tweaks or changes you’d make? I’d love to hear about the variations you’ve tried—or the ones you’re still dreaming up. Drop me a note or send a photo of your latest experiment to troy@mychipcarving.com.
September's Monthly Project
Cookie Molds
This year's 2 patterns are inspired by the 2025 Christmas Ornament. Try one or both! Or order a blank cookie mold and create your own pattern!
A cookie mold includes a 1.25" ball knob that can be glued on the back to make it easier to use.
Order a Cookie Mold with or without a Pattern
applied.

Dave's Pattern Modification
Hi Troy,
I hope you are having a great first day of fall! These are some chip carved earrings I have been carving for the last several years. I modified the pattern from Read N Try website by Roman Chernikov (https://readntry.com/free-chip-carving-patterns/). He put it into public domain. His design is 2 3\4 inches tall with 11 chips. I had to modify it to fit into the earrings. The earring stand is something I created this spring for a craft show to display earrings. It took me a couple months to decide on the end designs and find a butterfly I could use for a
pattern.
Dave
Thanks for sharing Dave! The earrings and stand are both beautiful. I bet they are a popular item! Thanks for sharing Roman's site - a nice collection of patterns!
