I share what one reader did to have fun coloring their carvings.

Howdy !
Â
Â
I received the following email this week that I really enjoyed, and think you will to!Â
Â
Last week my family came to visit so I had them color their ornament with pencils. They had a lot of fun. I purposely did not carve the center triangle so that they would have more to color. Just thought you would be interested in seeing them. NancyÂ
Â
What a brilliant way to allow others to participate in a chip carving project. Using colored pencils provides a clean, easy way to add color that everyone is familiar with.Â
Â
It was also neat to see an adjustment to the pattern to increase the available coloring area. I think asking others to color gives them an opportunity to appreciate the carving by analyzing how to approach the carved and uncarved
areas. Who knows, that might be enough to get them interested in learning how to chip carve one day.Â
Â
Anyway, I think it’s a great way to involve others in the creative process, all while enjoying time together! I’d love to hear your ideas on involving others in your projects. Let me know at troy@mychipcarving.com
October's Monthly ProjectÂ
Trivet : Zentangle PatternÂ
Â
The Zenangle pattern has a mix of small and large chips for contrast. The side accents can be carved Old World Style (as shown) or Swiss-style. Add color, stain, or keep it natural - it's sure to get noticed!
Â
Trivet's are a 7.5 " Basswood square with 4 button feet, and are 7/8" thick. They are available with or without a pattern applied.
Â
Â
Order a Trivet with or without a Pattern applied.Â
Here’s my spooky carving… My Bride has all of these holiday-themed earrings, and I’d love to get in on the fun but I refuse to buy a pair when I only need one! So I decided to carve my own. This little guy, in sycamore with an acrylic wash, is my Halloween earring. He’s about an inch and a half tall. The eyes and smile are chip
carved, anyway.
He’s based on a fridge magnet I carved a couple of years ago. I’ll be teaching them as a class for the James River Woodcarvers next fall.

I like it! That is little for a carving, but you've obviously figured out how to do it. The coloring is spot on, too.
