I share the responses I received from last week's newsletter.
Howdy !
Thank you to everyone who shared their favorite places to find patterns after last week’s newsletter! Your responses were fantastic!
One reader simply replied, “Quilting patterns.” After a quick search, I have to agree—there’s a treasure trove of quilt designs just waiting to be adapted for chip carving.
The blend of symmetry and creativity in quilting offers endless ideas for your next project.
Another carver mentioned designing their own patterns to make sure every piece is unique. There’s something special about seeing your own design come to life in wood—sometimes the pattern carves just as you imagined, and other times it surprises you (hopefully in a good way!).
With Holy Week upon us, I received this timely note: “Just saw an article about Pysanky
eggs. Made thoughts of chip carving dance in my head.” Pysanky eggs are beautifully decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs with intricate lines and geometric motifs. Here’s an example for you:
Another suggestion was to look at tiles and architectural features. I have to admit, my phone’s photo gallery is full of tile and wallpaper designs that caught my eye. Inspiration really is everywhere—sometimes where you least expect it! Here are some of the tiles and architecture sent in:
As I mentioned last week, this month’s pattern was inspired by a design I spotted on a paper plate. I made plenty of tweaks along the way, even deciding not to carve an element I’d originally included. Here’s the pattern as it appeared on the plate:
And here’s the final carved pattern—plenty of curved cuts and room for your own variations.
It’s a challenging project, but well worth the patience. I was pleased with the end result, and I hope you’ll give it a try!
What have you been carving lately? I'd love to see them! Send your photos to troy@mychipcarving.com
