When the weather turns cold, stay inside and start carving!
Howdy !
As Central Texas braces for a rare taste of winter ice, snow, and below-freezing temps, I’m reminded of one of the best things about chip carving: it’s a hobby you can enjoy indoors, no matter what the weather throws your way! When the cold rolls in this weekend, you’ll find me inside, knife in hand, escaping the chill for some cozy carving
time.
Funny enough, I first became interested in chip carving for the exact opposite reason. Years ago, I’d spend hours woodworking in my non-climate-controlled garage, sweating it out in the upper 90s (sometimes even the 100s!). Back then, the heat didn’t bother me much, but eventually, I started to think, “There’s got to be a way to keep working with wood without melting!” That’s when chip carving checked all the boxes for me:
Work with
wood
Create handmade art
Minimal space needed
Minimal tools required (no big investment!)
Can be done indoors, rain or shine
Now, as the temperature drops, I understand why so many carvers stock up on projects for winter. It’s the perfect excuse to try a new project, get a head start on gifts for next Christmas, or enjoy some downtime carving while the weather does its thing outside.
If you’re planning to stay in
and carve this weekend, let me know what you’re working on. I’d love to see your projects or hear your favorite “indoor carving” stories! You can always send your photos and stories to troy@mychipcarving.com.
