Read abut the simple step that turned 1 pattern into 2.
Howdy !
With Valentine’s Day this weekend, I decided to focus on Heart and Flower patterns in this month’s Platinum Member webinar. As I was searching for inspiration, I stumbled upon a tribal flower image that looked both elegant and simple, which is just the kind of design that’s perfect for chip carving for all skill
levels!
Using the Pattern Wizard, I created a new pattern consisting of two connecting three-corner chips with gentle curves. The real challenge comes where the points meet in the
center and avoiding chip out, but the overall design isn’t intimidating. It’s a great project whether you’re just starting out or have been carving for years.
While working on the first pattern, another flower design caught my eye. On closer look, I realized it was just the original two three-corner chips, copied, reversed, and overlaid. By narrowing the chips and moving the intersection, the pattern became a bit more complex but still relied on basic cuts. It’s amazing how simply mirroring a design can create something that feels brand
new!
What projects have you been working on lately? I'd love to see them! Please send them to troy@mychipcarving.com.
February's Monthly Project
7" x 6" Wall Cross:
Inner Cross Pattern
The Old World Style cuts along the outside edge, highlight an inner cross pattern made up of Swiss-style chip carving cuts. On the left, I've added some gel stain over 3 coats of clear acrylic, while the right is unfinished basswood. Either way, I think it's a beautiful pattern that's fun to carve!
Order a Wall Cross with or without a Pattern applied.
Includes a high quality beveled mirror. The mirror is glued in place with clear silicone sealant after carving is completed. Basswood 11-3/4 x 5 x 5/8″
I don't recall if I ever sent you my second hand mirror project. I've included pics of 2. The first I colored with the pencils, then stained it with walnut. It significantly clouded the beauty of the pencils. So for my second try I just went with raw Basswood, and what a difference it made.
Best
regards, Carl
I think both mirror projects look great, although I see your point on the stain clouding the color. Leaving the wood raw really lets the colors stand out. Nice work!!
