You might be surprised what led to this month's pattern.
Howdy !
I don’t know if it was my subconscious at work or not, but I somehow found another use for those practice boards this week…inspiration for this month’s Wine Glass Holder pattern!
All I knew was that I wanted a diamond shape around each opening. What to do inside those diamonds? That’s when the practice boards from last
month’s Hearts & Flowers webinar caught my eye.
The heart border pattern seemed like it could fit with a few tweaks. After some trial and error, it worked out beautifully. For the triangle spaces left by the connecting diamonds, I remembered the flower pattern from a few weeks ago. Turns out, half a flower fits perfectly into those triangles! Adding a border around the diamonds helped frame everything, and for the rounded ends, I matched a single flower
segment to the curve. It really tied the whole piece together.
It’s funny how practice boards aren’t just for practicing—they’re also great for sparking new ideas. I’m not the only one who thinks so, either. Be sure to check out Doug’s tip later in the newsletter for another creative use.

March's Monthly Project
Wine Glass Holder:
Hearts & Flowers Pattern
The Hearts & Flowers combination is simple and elegant, and would make an excellent wedding or anniversary gift.

Another use for practice boards - I often will try different font types on practice boards to see what they look liked carved and any challenges that that particular font may present. If it looks nice, I will finish the piece and then use it at shows when a customer is interested in commission work. Kind of a sales aid. I like the Becker typeface for my
carving.
