This month I'm going to help you answer the question, "Which one should I use?"

But before I get into "Which one what?" and "the different which ones", I've got a quickie contest for you.

Because you open and read my chip carving blabbery, (it's really a word, trust me!) 😜 here's the contest.

Now back to the question, "Which one should I use?"

When it comes to creating your own chip carving patterns, there are several different computer software programs to choose from. Here's a list I'll be working from.

Tessellation Maker
Amaziograph
Inkscape

Notice right away that I'll be explaining computer software programs and not creating your own patterns using pencil and paper. When I launched MyChipCarving in 2007, pencil and paper was my main method but it didn't take too long before I realized that in order to change, duplicate, modify, distribute and create patterns efficiently, finding computer software for the task was needed. Pattern Wizard

The Pattern Wizard program was one of several drawing, designing, architectural / drafting programs I tried. My focus was on finding a program that was...

easy to use
able to create common chip carving shapes, rosettes and borders
could export common picture files
affordable

The PW met all of these needs for the most part. I would have liked something less expensive ($79) but PW was and is the only program I know of that is designed for creating the kind of patterns we want to create.

*I didn't list it above, because I've been primarily a PC user, but having a program designed for PC and Apple would have been ideal. While PW can be run on an Apple product using a virtual PC desktop, being designed for both operating systems would have been best.

A couple of years ago, Patrick Roberts, who created PW and Rapid Resizer, took both products online as a monthly subscription product.

He has allowed MyChipCarving to continue to sell the stand alone program which is a good thing. The stand alone version is more powerful than the online product.

Here's a sample of just a few of the many patterns I've created using the Pattern Wizard.

The Rapid Resizer is a sister program to the PW. The RR is a very easy program to use when you want to take pictures in any format and change their size. Personally I've only used the RR one time when I had to create a huge pattern for a carving above a fireplace.
