Notice a couple things in this image.
1. The first joint of my thumb is firmly in the notch on the side of the handle. ALL MyChipCarving Knives have a 60 degree thumb notch on both sides of the handle (R or L handed) to register your grip consistently every time you pick up your knife. Muy importante!!
2. Thumb and knuckle are on the wood. Holding your knife as shown in step 1, place the tip of your thumb and one or two knuckles on the surface of the wood to form a cutting angle in the 55-65 degree range.
It doesn't matter if it's 58, 65 or 61.3 degrees. You're looking for consistency! Every time you pick up your knife, the angle should be close to what it was last time.
Holding your knife like this will help you make consistent cuts so all cuts meet in the bottom of the chip and your chips come out with limited cuts. 👍
Also, locking your thumb against the handle and into the notch results in SAFE carving! With your thumb against the handle, it is impossible to cut your hand. Keep your free hand out of the way and you'll avoid injury.
In my 35+ years of chip carving I've never cut myself while carving. I don't say this to boast, but rather, to show you that practicing proper technique will keep you safe!
