Hi !

There's a Fakebook Group called Woodcarving For Beginners. I'm a stalker there and jump in and reply whenever I can offer some help.

I've probably replied a half-dozen times or more to answer questions like these...

Knife Sharpening

As we've been looking at the "Basics" this month, I would've made a grave mistake to skip over Knife Sharpening.

We had some close friends visiting us this past weekend and Carolyn has taken up an interest in woodworking. She has gotten some basic training on using a hand plane but was telling me how she's struggling with it, gouging the wood and getting really frustrated. We had some time together this morning and I showed her some of the basics when it comes to using a hand plane.

First and most importantly, I showed her how to SHARPEN a plane iron. I demonstrated the steps using stones so she could know what it feels like to plane wood with a truly sharp hand plane. She lit up with confidence when she made some thin, consistent shavings that left a glassy smooth surface. This wouldn't have been possible with a dull plane iron.

The same is true when it comes to chip carving!

You will NEVER experience the joy and satisfaction of making clean and glassy smooth cuts if your knife isn't Scary Sharp.

I've shared this video with you several times in the past and I'm sure it will reappear sometime again in the future. It's that important.

I have been carving for over 20 years (chip carving for the past 4 – 5 years) and I have used many different sharpening systems. Water stones, Arkansas stones, ceramic stones and diamond plates, plus I have four (4) power sharpening machines but, I have never been able to get a knife as sharp as I can with the “Scary Sharp Sharpening Kit”.
Using a black sharpie I draw a mark on the edge to be sharpened so I can see where I am touching the blade.
I place the sharpening board on a table so my hand is free from any obstruction. I then sharpen one side of the blade on the 1200 grit strip using 10 strokes , then turn the knife over and repeat this process, turn the knife back to the first side and count down 9 stokes, turn the knife back to the second side and repeat 9 strokes. I continue until I have counted down from 10 strokes to 1 on each side. At the end of this phase I make sure that I have created a burr on the edge of the blade. I repeat this process on the 1800, 4000,and 8000 strips. Finally I apply sharpening compound to the strop and use the same process as I did for sharpening.
Believe me after using this process you will have a “SCARY SHARP KNIFE”
