We had some close friends visiting us this past weekend and Carolyn has taken up an interest in woodworking. She has gotten some basic training on using a hand plane but was telling me how she's struggling with it, gouging the wood and getting really frustrated. We had some time together this morning and I
showed her some of the basics when it comes to using a hand plane.
First and most importantly, I showed her how to SHARPEN a plane iron. I demonstrated the steps using stones so she could know what it feels like to plane wood with a truly sharp hand plane. She lit up with confidence when she made some thin, consistent shavings that left a glassy smooth surface. This wouldn't have been possible with a dull plane iron.
The same is true when it comes to chip carving!
