let's finish with a finish!

Hi !

Last weekend I had the honor of teaching a 3-day class at the Maine Coast Workshop in Camden. We had a wonderful time together! Here are a few pictures that I actually remembered to take!

Now we'll pick up where we left off last week.

First, I showed you how I take an IDEA and turn that into a workable PATTERN.

Second, you take the PATTERN and get it ready to go on the wood!

Third, CHIP CARVING!

Now it's now time to FINISH with a FINISH!

The finishing process starts by carefully removing any leftover pattern lines.

This is done with a Tombow Sand Eraser. The eraser breaks apart while at the same time removing the PTT and/or graphite paper lines. It won't damage your carving, but still erase carefully.

Vacuum the entire box to remove all dust and eraser dust.

Use a brush to apply one coat of Sanding Sealer. The sealer will soak into the wood. Coat the entire box, inside and out, and let it dry for about one hour.

Very lightly sand the surfaces to make them smooth. The sealer will raise the grain on the wood and you can feel it.

Apply a coat of Dark Walnut Gel Stain to the outside of the box. I kept the gel stain outside the carved rosettes. I'm using a small rag for application.

I added color to the rosettes using metallic acrylic paints and used the same Dark Walnut gel stain on the thin lines using a brush.

I'm not going to add a clear coat on top fearing it will dull the glitter of the metallic paints. If you use a non-metallic paint, adding a couple coats of spray satin lacquer would be a good idea.
