I recently read a post from a beginning chip carver who showed his first carving he did with a utility knife. It was really rough as you could've guessed.
He commented, "I think I need to get a real chip carving knife."
I replied that when I first started chip carving I did a similar thing and made my own knife and gave it a whirl. It wasn't long before I bought my first knife, a Klotzli Swiss chip carving knife from Wayne Barton.
