Hi !
Last week you got a glimpse into how I take an IDEA and turn that into a workable PATTERN.
Now let's take that PATTERN and get it ready to go!

Reminder:
Before we get into this week's content, I wanted to let you know that I'll be teaching a live virtual chip carving class via Vesterheim Museum and Folk Art School.
There are only a handful of seats left!
This is an Essentials Class as you'll read in the description. We'll be carving 4 basswood coasters and covering the basics of chip carving.
Hope to see you at the first class, Wed. July 7th, 6:00-8:00pm CT!
It's important to prepare the surface of the wood you'll be carving.
All the basswood items we sell are sanded quite smooth, but sanding them with finer grit abrasive paper is still a good idea.
I suggest you sand up to 220 grit or finer paper. The flatter the surface the better starting point you're creating for your knife.
If you're sanding by hand, use a sanding block.
Power sanding with a random orbital sander will speed up the process
Bust out your vacuum cleaner with a brush on the hose and remove all the dust. Now you're ready to apply the pattern.
While you're sanding it's a good idea to plug in your Pattern Transfer Tool so it has at least 10 minutes to heat up.
With your pattern printed on either a laser printer or photocopy machine (both user toner), cut on the outer lines so it will line up perfectly on the top of the box.
This pattern is quite long so it's a good idea to tape it down in several places so it doesn't shift during the application.
I'm right handed so I hold the PTT in my right hand and grab the left edge of the pattern with my left hand. That way I can lift up the paper
as the PTT moves across the surface and see if there are any places I missed. Also, I like to place a no-slip mat underneath the item so it doesn't slide around. When the PTT is hot, the transfer takes only minutes! (Can you imagine how long it would take drawing this pattern on the
wood?)
With the pattern on the wood, you're ready to carve! And that's where we'll pick it up next time.
Are you ready to carve this month's project?
👍 You can do it! 👍
Order it with the pattern applied if you like!
