There's just something about a quality knife that cuts wood like butter leaving a glassy smooth finish. I can't get enough of it!

In this E-letter I'll explain to you a few design principles when it came to designing MyChipCarving Knives.

Design principle #1 - Full tang blade

The tang of a knife blade is the metal part of the blade that extends into the handle. Many knifes consist of a short piece of metal glued or riveted into the handle.

All MyChipCarving Knives have a tang that runs the full length of the handle so when you're holding the knife, the entire blade is in your hand!

Design principle #2 - High Quality Steel

Steel technology has taken huge leaps forward in the past 40 years. I've used several different steels, all of them excellent in edge retention, ease of sharpening and edge sharpness.

Design principle #3 - Blade Design

The design of the blade is not by accident. The angle of the blade allows the point to reach the bottom of the chip and provides a slicing cut (purple arrow) as it enters the wood. If the blade is too straight (red arrow) and flat as it comes out of the handle, it may not slice the wood fibers as easily as it could.

Design principle #4 - Comfortable and Effective Handle

The handle of any knife has to feel good in your hand if you plan on using it for very long. This can be a challenge as a knife maker because everyone has different size hands. My goal has been to create handles that will suite the majority of carvers, man or woman, right or left handed, and feel great when carving.

For a knife handle to be effective, it has to sit in your hand so each cut is made at the same angle, time and time again. Enter the THUMB NOTCH! Lock the joint of your thumb into the notch, place your thumb and a couple of knuckles on the wood surface and the blade will approach the wood in the 55-65 degree angle.

A great looking handle is a big plus too!

Design principle #5 - Sharp! Sharp! Sharp!

Since day one I've insisted that every knife arrive Sharp and ready to carve when it arrives on your doorstep.

LEARNING HOW to sharpen and hone a knife is important but it SHOULDN'T be the first thing to learn before experiencing the joy of carving with a sharp knife. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who didn't give chip carving a fair shake because they bought a knife that wasn't sharp and couldn't sharpen it themselves. That's a shame.

Once you know what it feels like to carve with a sharp knife, NOW you'll know why honing with a strop every 20-30 minutes is important to maintain the sharp edge and when it's time to get out the Scary Sharp Sharpening Kit and return the edge to what it used to be.
